Diagnostic Role of Bone Marrow Aspiration and Trephine Biopsy in Haematological Practice

چکیده
Bone marrow examination is a useful and cost effective diagnostic procedure in haematological practice for the diagnosis of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic haematological diseases. These procedures are also employed for typing of anaemias, evaluation of cytopenias and pyrexia of unknown origin. The bone marrow examination may either confirm the clinically suspected disease or may provide the previously unsuspected diagnosis1-3. Bone marrow aspiration alone is usually sufficient to diagnose nutritional anaemias, most of the acute leukaemias and Immune Thrombocytopenias because of ease of the applying pearl iron stain and other cytochemical stains on aspirate smears but it does not provide important diagnostic information in patients with granulomatous disease, myelofibrosis and bone marrow infiltration4. Beside this the bone marrow examination is a commonly employed tool for staging This article may be cited as: Khan TA, Khan IA, Mahmood K. Beware of Bone Marrow: Incidental Detection and Primary Diagnosis of Solid Tumours in Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsies; A Study of 22 Cases
Background & objective: Introduction: First detection of any solid tumour as metastatic deposits in bone marrow directs clinicians to start searching for the primary tumour. Detection of bone marrow metastasis determines the stage of the malignancy, prognosis, mode of treatment, chemotherapeutic response and follow-up in case of relapse. The aim of the current...

Introduction Marrow biopsy by surgical trephine is an older procedure than needle aspiration. It is only since the late 1950s that core needle biopsy of the bone marrow has been widely used. Since that time, it has had a considerable effect on diagnostic haematology, pathology and oncology. Wide acceptance is associated with the introduction of a simple procedure using the Jamshidi needle to im...

متن کاملCollagenase digestion of bone marrow trephine biopsy specimens: an important adjunct to haematological diagnosis when marrow aspiration fails.
Failure to obtain sufficient material from marrow aspiration (dry tap) posed a diagnostic problem in two patients with pancytopenia. By using collagenase digestion of the trephine biopsy specimen, a precise diagnosis was reached. This technique is very useful because it permits flow cytometric and immunocytochemical analyses of cell suspensions obtained after collagenase digestion of the trephi...
متن کاملThe Role of Bone Marrow Aspiration and Bone Marrow Biopsy in Diagnosis of Bone Marrow Metastases
Background: Bone marrow is the site of many malignant disorders and it is one of the common places for solid tumors to metastasize. Examination of the bone marrow aspirate and biopsy is a routine procedure performed for assessment of various conditions such as cytopenias, hematologic neoplasms, nonmalignant disorders and metastatic neoplasms. Methods: The patients were referred to the Hema...
